National University of Singapore Admission requirement

Admission requirements

You should have completed or are completing high school education that is conducted over a period of at least twelve years. You may view the list of acceptable high school qualifications here.

Applicants are required to meet the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement as set by the Ministry of Education, Singapore by having one of the following:

a) Minimum of D7 for the higher MTL paper taken at the Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level examination

b) Minimum of ‘S’ grade for the H1 MTL paper or General Studies in Chinese taken at the Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level examination

c) Minimum of ‘S’ grade for the H2 MTLL paper taken at the Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level examination

d) Pass in the MTL ‘B’ Syllabus paper at the Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level examination

e) Pass in MTL-in-lieu subject approved by Ministry of Education, Singapore

f) Exemption from MTL approved by Ministry of Education, Singapore

Applicants who are unable to fulfill the MTL requirement for admission but satisfy all other admission requirements will be admitted on a provisional basis. During the course of study, these students will be required to attend the MTL course (Chinese/ Malay/ Tamil) conducted by the University; or attain the minimum requirement as listed above by retaking the MTL paper at the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level examinations before they are allowed to graduate.

Submission of the official MTL examination results slip/ transcript/ exemption approval is required for the University to review your fulfilment of the MTL requirement.

NUS Graduate Admission Requirement

Prospective student should have a relevant Bachelor’s degree with honours at least Second Class Lower or its equivalent. Candidates applying for University’s Scholarships (NUS Research Scholarships or President’s Graduate Fellowships) or Eng.D/Ph.D. programmes are expected to have a Bachelor’s degree with honours at least Second Class Upper.

International applicants may demonstrate their English proficiency by means of GRE/TOEFL/IELTS test scores. Applicants must be able to submit at least one score/result e.g. GRE/TOEFL/IELTS, as part of the application.

Candidates are to obtain the following minimum scores:

  • – GRE score of 320 (Verbal & Quantitative Total) and 160 (Verbal) and 160 (Quantitative) and 3.5 (Analytical), or
  • – TOEFL score of 85 for Internet Based Test (IBT), or
  • – IELTS score of 6.0
Note that possession of these qualifications does not guarantee admission. Admission decisions are based on multiple considerations, including the number and quality of applicants and the capacity of the programme applied to.

Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Admission Requirements

Selection of applicants for undergraduate courses will be based on academic merit. Due to keen competition for limited vacancies, the choice order of courses will also determine the selection outcome. Hence, applicants are advised to list out their course choices in their order of preference.

Applicants will be considered for admission based on the strength of their academic achievements and additional interviews/tests if required. Applicants would need to obtain good passes in the following subjects:

H1/H2/H3 Curriculum

Best four content subjects (i.e. 3 H2 and 1 H1 content-based* subjects, with at least 1 content subject to be from a contrasting discipline)

 

‘A’/‘AO’ Curriculum

Best three ‘A’ Level content subjects

 

General Paper (GP) or Knowledge Inquiry (KI)

Either General Paper (GP) or Knowledge Inquiry (KI) subject taken in the same sitting with the H2/’A’ Level content-based subjects.

Students may take KI in lieu of GP.  As KI is counted as two H1 subjects (one in place of GP and one for H1 requirement), students who take KI will not be required to take the H1 content-based subject.

Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Requirement

Meet the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement for admission by having one of the following*:

  • Minimum of D7 for the higher MTL paper taken at the ‘O’ Level examination.
  • Minimum of ‘S’/ ‘D7’ grade for the H1/‘AO Level’ MTL paper or General Studies in Chinese.
  • Minimum of ‘S’/‘O’ grade for the H2/‘A Level’ MTLL paper taken at the ‘A’ Level examination.
  • Pass in the MTL ‘B’ Syllabus paper at the ‘A’ Level examination.

If you have been exempted from MTL, the MOE-approved subject-in-lieu will be considered as your MTL subject.

*Applicants who are unable to fulfil the MTL requirement but satisfy all other admission requirements will be admitted to the University on a provisional basis. Applicants will be required to fulfil the MTL requirement before being permitted to graduate.

* Please note that H1 Mother-Tongue Language (MTL) subject cannot be considered in-lieu of a H1 content-based subject.

Polytechnic Diploma from Singapore Admission Requirements

Applicants, regardless of nationality, seeking admission to NUS should present a Diploma from a Polytechnic in Singapore.

Applicants will be considered for admission to the University based on the competiveness of their Polytechnic and Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level results. The weightage of the 2 components is as follows:

NUS accepts applications from polytechnic graduates who have not taken the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ level examinations but have completed other types of secondary or post-secondary education. In such cases, applicants will be assessed based on their polytechnic results, as well as any other academic and non-academic achievements presented for admission. In addition, the University may evaluate such applicants based on other means such as interviews, aptitude tests etc.

The Diploma must be acceptable for the course(s) applied for. Applicants should also submit your Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level results, if available.

If you are a student in your final semester of study at the Polytechnic, you can apply with your results obtained from your first 5 semesters of study. If you meet the admissions criteria, you will receive a provisional offer. You will then be requested to submit your final semester results.

The admissions exercise for applicants presenting Diploma qualifications from a Polytechnic in Singapore opens from 1 to 21 February every year.

NUS High School Diploma Admission Requirements

Applicants (regardless of nationality) seeking admission to NUS should present the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science Diploma.

This includes full-time National Servicemen (NSF) with NUSHS Diploma who have a course reserved in NUS, but wish to apply for a change of course.

Applicants will be considered for admission based on the strength of their academic achievements and additional interviews/tests if required.

For courses that require additional interviews/tests, applicants will also be assessed based on their performance during interviews and/or tests.

You should also meet the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement for admission by having one of the following:

  1. minimum of D7 for the higher MTL paper taken at the ‘O’ Level examination
  2. minimum of ‘S’ grade for the H1 MTL paper or General Studies in Chinese
  3. minimum of ‘S’ grade for the H2 MTL paper taken at the ‘A’ Level examination
  4. pass in MTL ‘B’ or a S grade for H1 MTL/ MTL-in-lieu or H2 MTL Language and Literature or H1 General Studies in Chinese at Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level
  5. pass in MTL-in-lieu subject approved by Ministry of Education, Singapore
  6. exemption from MTL approved by Ministry of Education, Singapore

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Admission Requirements

Application for admission in Academic Year 2019-2020 will commence from 15 October 2018 and close on 21 February 2019.

Applicants (regardless of nationality) seeking admission to NUS should present the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. This includes full-time National Servicemen (NSF) with IB Diploma who have a course reserved in NUS, but wish to apply for a change of course.

Applicants will be considered for admission based on the strength of their academic achievements and additional interviews/tests if required.

For courses that require additional interviews/tests, applicants will also be assessed based on their performance during interviews and/or tests.

All applicants are strongly encouraged to authorise International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) to release their International Baccalaureate (IB) transcripts to NUS. Applicants can do so by informing their school’s IB coordinator.

Applicants would need to fulfill the following requirements:

Students presenting November 2018 or earlier IB Diploma Programme Examination Session results

These students may apply for admission with their actual International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma results. For more information, please refer to the FAQs.

Some students may be subjected to the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement for admission.

Students presenting May 2019 IB Diploma Programme Examination Session results

These students may apply for admission with their predicted International Baccalaureate (IB) results, as attested by their high school.

Both SAT and SAT Subject Tests scores* are required only if students

  • are applying for Medicine and/or Dentistry course
  • wish to have an early admission consideration

* SAT score reports must be submitted if you have indicated the results in the online application form. Lack of the necessary supporting documents will affect the processing of your application.

Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Requirement

Meet the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement as set by the Ministry of Education, Singapore:

The Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement (that is applicable as indicated in the above table) can be met by having one of the following:

a) Pass in MTL A: Literature, or MTL A: Language and Literature, or Language B MTL at Standard or Higher Level at International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (the IB Standard Level Language ab initio does not fulfil the requirement);
b) Minimum of D7 grade for Higher MTL at Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level (the IGCSE MTL First Language examination does not fulfil the requirement);
c) Minimum of ‘S’ grade for the H2 MTLL paper taken at the Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level examination;
d) Pass in MTL ‘B’ or a S grade for H1 MTL/ MTL-in-lieu or H2 MTL Language and Literature or H1 General Studies in Chinese at Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level;
e) Pass in MTL-in-lieu subject approved by Ministry of Education, Singapore;
f) Exemption from MTL approved by Ministry of Education, Singapore

Those who have not fulfilled the MTL requirement may still apply for admission with no prejudice to their application. However, if accepted, they will be required to fulfil the MTL requirement during their course of study.

Applicants who are unable to fulfill the MTL requirement for admission but satisfy all other admission requirements will be admitted on a provisional basis. During the course of study, these students will be required to attend the MTL course (Chinese/ Malay/ Tamil) conducted by the University; or attain the minimum requirement as listed above by retaking the MTL paper at the IBDP or Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level examinations before they are allowed to graduate.

Applicants who have been away from Singapore’s school system for some years and have not kept up with the study of their MTL or a language that can be offered as MTL-in-lieu may apply for MTL exemption. The MTL exemption application will be facilitated by the universities as part of the university application, and the results made known to applicants who receive admission offers from the university. Please note that MOE does not accept direct applications for MTL exemption. The application for MTL exemption will also not prejudice the evaluation of the application for a place in the university.
