Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) to offer Aircraft Systems Engineering Degree in 2018
The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) is launching a new degree programme, the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Aircraft Systems Engineering, as well as a new specialisation in Baking and Pastry Arts under the Culinary Institute of America’s (CIA) Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Food Business Management at SIT, for Academic Year 2018/2019.
SIT Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Aircraft Systems Engineering
The SIT Aircraft Systems Engineering degree programme, developed in collaboration with SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC), is the first such degree to be offered by an autonomous university in Singapore. Built on an interdisciplinary curriculum that intersects engineering and science, which utilises a practical hands-on approach, the programme aims to develop graduates for careers as licensed aircraft engineers, project engineers, and technical service/repair development engineers. This is in line with the university’s mission to groom industry-ready students while providing well-equipped talent for the Aerospace and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) industries.
The first intake of around 48 students for the three-year degree programme will commence classes in September 2018. Students will be trained by both SIT faculty, as well as instructors who are Licensed Aircraft Engineers from SIAEC’s Training Academy. Students will also undergo an eight-month Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP), a signature programme of SIT-conferred degrees, at SIAEC in their third year. The IWSP will see students actively apply theoretical knowledge to solve problems and gain first-hand industry experience in aircraft maintenance.
In addition to the SIT-conferred degree upon graduation, students will also be awarded a Certificate of Recognition (CoR) by SIAEC, a Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) SAR-147 approved Maintenance Training Organisation. This CoR certifies that the holder has successfully completed a SAR-147 Approved Basic Course, which is one of the requirements for the award of an Aircraft Maintenance Licence (AML).
“The air transport industry in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific is undergoing rapid expansion and transformation, and there is demand for skilled engineers and technicians to support this fast-growing sector. As a university of applied learning, we want to produce the ‘best-in-class specialists’ who will be catalysts for transformation. The new Aircraft Systems Engineering programme, together with the rest of our applied degree programmes, is designed to better prepare SIT students and graduates for future employment in the new economy,” said Professor Loh Han Tong, Deputy President (Academic) & Provost, SIT.
“SIAEC is proud to partner SIT in this new Aircraft Systems Engineering degree programme for the aerospace/MRO industries. Such industry-university collaboration benefits students, employers and industry as it shortens the total time taken to build up skills for various jobs, as relevant practical skills are imparted during the three-year programme,” said Ms Zarina Piperdi, Senior Vice President (Human Resources), SIAEC.
CIA Bachelor of Business Administration in Food Business Management (Baking and Pastry Arts)
Offered for the first time in Singapore, the two-year BBA in Food Business Management (Baking and Pastry Arts) will provide students with an in-depth understanding of the baking and pastry world, as well as valuable hands-on bakeshop experience, with 1,300 hours of hands-on classes. Offering the proven curriculum the CIA delivers at its American campuses, the Baking and Pastry Arts specialisation will build students’ understanding and command of bread, cake and pastry production, business skills, and the catering industry. The Baking and Pastry Arts specialisation will be offered alongside the BBA in Food Business Management’s other specialisation in Culinary Arts. The first intake of around 16 students for the Baking and Pastry Arts specialisation will commence classes in August 2018.
For AY2018/2019, SIT will offer 43 degree programmes, of which 12 are SIT’s own degree programmes, 12 are joint degree programmes and 19 are overseas university programmes (in partnership with seven reputable overseas universities).
SIT Admissions Exercise and Open House 2018
SIT’s admissions period for AY 2018/2019 is from 11 January to 19 March 2018. Interested students can apply via the SIT website at SingaporeTech.edu.sg.
