SCELSE PhD Scholarship

Complex microbial biofilms are the dominant lifeform
on earth where they perform important biological
processes that are critical for the functioning of our planet.
SCELSE aims to link new insights from the life sciences
with skills and emerging technologies in engineering and
natural sciences to understand, harness and control microbial
biofilm communities.

The basis of SCELSE research
The Singapore Centre on Environmental Life
Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is a unique
interdisciplinary Research Centre of
Excellence (RCE), bridging environmental
engineering and contemporary life
sciences to explore and translate the
biology of microbial biofilms into
environmental solutions.
SCELSE is working to harness
microbial community-driven processes
for environmental sustainability, e.g. to
degrade harmful pollutants, self-purify urban
surface water, recycle used water and minimise
environmental health risks.
The SCELSE scientific team includes world-class
leaders in various disciplines, such as Professors
Staffan Kjelleberg, Yehuda Cohen, Peter Little,
Stephan Schuster, Michael Givskov, Stefan
Wuertz, among others.

focusing on scientific excellence,
recognising world-class research as
the platform for future innovation,
research and development. We are
currently building our research strength
in environmental life sciences engineering
and seeks to nurture research talent and foster
future leaders in this emerging field.

Fields of study
SCELSE’s graduate students can select from four fields of
biofilm-related study designed to function in an integrated way:
1. Environmental Engineering
2. Meta-’omics and Systems Biology
3. Microbial Biofilms
4. Public Health
SCELSE graduate students have the advantage of gaining
skills as part of a true interdisciplinary team.

Eligibility
• Open to graduates from a college, university,
or technical school of acceptable international
standing
• 2nd Upper Class in Honours degree or equivalent at
Bachelor’s level
Coverage
• Award period: 4 years
• Full tuition fees
• Highly competitive monthly stipend
• Allowances for conferences, IT, thesis preparation
• PhD degree awarded by either – NTU or NUS
